2009-01-21
January 21st, 2009 marks the launch date for the 1st New Haven County Youth Rugby program. In association with two public schools: The New Horizons School for higher achievements and The Riverside Education Academy, the Warriors coaching staff have implemented a 10 week rugby program directed at alternate high schools in New Haven.
Discussions between warriors coaching staff and both high school principals began in November 2008 after a presentation was made to the students and faculty. The initial response was very positive and some natural athletes were immediately indentified during the introduction to basic skills exercises.
Our goal is to introduce less privileged high school students to the sport of rugby, to teach and develop new skills, and to encourage teamwork and communication. We view this as a milestone toward developing rugby league in New Haven County. The New Haven Warriors successfully won the 2008 AMNRL Championship with 13 newly registered Club members, 8 of which participated in Grand Final.
