Wildcats Forfeit To Warriors

The Warriors were disappointed to not renew the intrastate rivalry with the Connecticut Wildcats to open their season. The Wildcats were unable to field a squad for Saturday’s game and the Warriors were handed a bonus point win. Instead the Warriors took advantage of a beautiful day and cheered for the youth curtain raiser and had a full team training session followed by a family day cookout at the home grounds.

Coach Roy Leoni was very impressed with the youth players, and will look to promote them into the top grade in the coming weeks. In particular players to stand out were Anthony Sunia, Kea Misipeka and Dillon Ford.

“For guys that have never played before, I was impressed at how well they took on all the information from training. Some of these kids will really push some of the seniors for postions in the top side team.”

The senior side ran an apposed training session against each other for 50 minutes. The players made the most out of a difficult and disappointing situation. It was the Warriors first full team run for the year, as players have been tied up with work and family commitments. A number of the youth players also filled in to give them some experience. Leoni said things were looking good for the Warriors this year and was happy with the way the side had trained.

“We have a bunch of new guys who have never played rugby or league before. They are learining new stuff every week and coming on in leaps and bounds. The senior more experinced guys have been really good with helping the new guys with the plays and rules.”

Next weekend the Warriors travel to Washington DC for a matchup with the Slayers who are coming off two tough opening weeks.
